Roy Waller, 1941 - 2010

To paraphrase Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it started, as things often do, with a death. Jimbo Finbow was primarily set up to offer a tongue-in-cheek look at sport in Britain, but we're only on day two of operations and Norfolk has now lost one of its own.

The radio personality and sports commentator Roy Waller sadly died yesterday at the age of 69, due to complications of a liver disease. Regular listeners to Radio Norfolk will know that Roy commentated on Norwich games from the studio's inception in 1980 until breakfast presenter Chris Goreham took over in 2007.

Roy brought so much character to Saturday afternoons, and his fierce love of the Canaries was tempered by a Murray Walker-esque tendency to confuse players in dramatic moments. He was criticised in some quarters for his strong Norfolk accent, but he was much loved by those who enjoyed his radio show and fellow Norwich City supporters alike, and a collection of tributes from his many fans is expected to be published in tomorrow's Eastern Daily Press.

As part of his show, Roy interviewed my friend, local actor Martin Ballantyne, a couple of years ago. Martin said today, 'I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Roy Waller in April 2008. He was a really nice professional guy, and he will be sorely missed.'

I have always appreciated the amusing but effective way that Roy presented the regular weekend dramas at Carrow Road, and hope that the club will look into some way to commemorate his passing. To me, he will be remembered as a true legend.
